CHRIS TRAUTMAN
Pilot & Founder — Special Operations Aviation Leadership, Applied to Private Aviation
I am a former Special Operations Instructor Pilot with nearly a decade of experience leading aviation operations, training programs, and mission-critical teams. Throughout my career, I have operated in high-pressure environments where sound decision-making, leadership, and adaptability were essential to mission success.
In addition to flying and instructing, I have held multiple leadership and management roles, including Training Program Manager, Director of Flight Scheduling, SUAS Program Director, Flight Commander, and Operations Planner. I have overseen large-scale training initiatives, managed complex scheduling operations supporting hundreds of personnel, directed multimillion-dollar capability programs, and led teams responsible for executing global operations. My experience spans aviation, program management, organizational leadership, strategic planning, and technology integration.
I have also served as a liaison and planner supporting joint and multinational exercises throughout the Pacific region, coordinating efforts across military organizations, partner nations, and senior leadership. These roles strengthened my ability to solve complex problems, manage competing priorities, and deliver results in dynamic environments.
Today, I am focused on applying the leadership, operational, and program management skills developed during my career in Special Operations to new opportunities in private aviation. I am passionate about continuous learning, building strong teams, and creating meaningful impact wherever I serve.
Flight Experience & Mission History
I'm an experienced single-engine pilot, with time in the General Atomics MQ-9, Cessna 152/172/182, Diamond DA-20, Piper PA-28 Cherokee, and T-6 Texan. Over the course of my career I've planned and executed flight profiles across a wide range of mission types, including ISR, search and rescue, direct action, kinetic strike, and humanitarian operations such as medical and operational evacuations.
As Aircraft Commander, I was responsible for reviewing taskings, mission requirements, intelligence, and weather data, and for overseeing every aspect of mission planning and execution, from flight preparation and flight plan filing to crew briefings. I made sure aircraft were properly pre-flighted, inspected, loaded, and equipped for the mission at hand, and I piloted aircraft and commanded aircrews, operating onboard systems and directing navigation in compliance with FAA and DoD regulations.
My flying experience includes route planning using aeronautical charts, navigation instruments, and instrument flight procedures, with operations in IFR and low-visibility conditions. I've also developed strong emergency operations skills, safely recovering aircraft and crews through abnormal and emergency situations, and I've conducted ISR, combat, and weapons employment missions in austere and remote environments. I'm also trained in Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE).
